Sustainable Tranportation Policy Lab

Sustainable Transport Lab: Driving Smart, Inclusive, and Future-Oriented Mobility Solutions

The Sustainable Transport Lab, part of the Institute of Urban Studies and Spatial Planning, is a forward-thinking hub committed to reshaping mobility systems in Kosovo through sustainable, inclusive, and technology-driven approaches. As cities face growing environmental and social pressures, the Lab provides innovative planning, research, and design solutions to support healthier, more accessible, and future-oriented urban transport.

Guided by the principles of safety, affordability, accessibility, environmental sustainability, and multimodal integration, the Lab works at the intersection of strategic planning and practical intervention. It supports the development of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), integrated transport policies, and urban mobility strategies aligned with national priorities and EU standards.

Beyond policy, the Lab is engaged in direct urban interventions such as pedestrian zones, walkability improvements, cycling infrastructure, and low-emission areas. These projects aim to enhance livability, reduce car dependency, and reclaim public space for people and the environment. Through advanced simulation tools and predictive modeling, the Lab applies smart technologies to analyze traffic systems, test multimodal scenarios, and inform evidence-based decisions.

A key strength of the Lab is its ability to connect research with practice. Collaborating with municipalities, ministries, and academic institutions, the Lab pilots and scales innovative solutions, while also offering technical assistance and capacity-building for public authorities and planners.

Currently, the Lab is leading the development of the Simulation Center for Traffic and Mobility in Prishtina. This facility will model real-time traffic flows, public transport efficiency, and pedestrian behavior to guide smarter urban mobility planning.

In parallel, the Lab is developing the EcoMobility Index for Kosovo Cities, using the EcoMobility SHIFT framework to evaluate and promote people-centered, low-emission transport systems. The Index provides a practical tool for municipalities to assess current mobility performance, identify gaps, and advance sustainable transport transitions grounded in accessibility, safety, and climate responsibility.
